Joan Walter, 89

Joan (Halliday) Walter, 89, formally of Minford, passed away peacefully with her husband by her side on Saturday, December 23, 2017 at Hill View Retirement Center. She was born August 7, 1928 in Aldershot, England in the county of Southhampton. She was the daughter of Major William and Martha Emily (Wallace) Halliday. Joan was proceded in death by her five sisters, Phyllis Halliday, Florence Hansford, Olive Massingham, Beatrice Brookes, her twin sister Betty Havell; one brother, William (Bill) Halliday; one grandson, Christopher Walter, and one great-grandson, Kenneth Mason Coriell. She is survived by her loving husband of 66 years, William (Bill) Walter; a son, William (Buck) (Shirley) Walter and a daughter, SueAnn (Susie) (Kenneth) Coriell. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Chad Walter, Stephanie (Darrell) Tobins, Amanda Walter, Wesley (Linni) Coriell, Wade (Amy) Coriell, Sara (Chad) McHenry, and her great-grandchildren, Tyler and Trent Tobins, Christene Eing, Clair Mossbarger, Gracyn and Hadley Coriell, Tyler and Sydney Speas, and Walker, Lily and Cambell McHenry. Joan began working in the candy department at Marting’s Department Store when her children were little. She eventually became a buyer for the Fifth Floor. She especially loved Christmas time at Marting’s. She was known as the English speaking lady at the candy counter. Joan was always involved with her children and active in the Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, Minford PTA, Minford sports with her children and you would always see her in the concession stands at the ball games. Joan loved to square dance with her husband and friends, travel and spend vacations with her Marting’s friends and husband in Myrtle Beach, SC. She was active in her later years with her church, The First Lutheran Church on Grandview and worked the baby pantry every last Thursday of the month. Joan deeply loved her husband and her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and her extended English family, especially JoAnne and Alan Kemp, Steven Havell and Tony Havell. The family would like to especially thank Hill View 3rd Floor Nursing staff, aids, techs, laundry persons, dining room staff, maintenance persons and also the 1st Floor Administrative staff for all their wonderful care and assistance for Joan and Bill, also to SOMC Hospice for your last minute care. The family would also like to give a special thank you to the waitresses and cooks at the Minford Airport Restaurant for their kindness and special care they paid to Joan and Bill.

There will be a Memorial Service on Wednesday, December 27, 2017 at 7:00 p.m. at Erwin-Dodson-Allen Funeral Home in Minford with Pastor Evan Fisher reciting. Friends may call from 6 to 7 p.m. prior to the service. Online condolences may be sent to www.edafh.com.
