Jim Gilbert, 81
Jim Gilbert, 81, of Minford, died Friday, December 4, 2015 at his residence. Born April 12, 1934 in Scioto County, a son of the late Hubert E. and Peachie (Dawson) Gilbert, he was a retired teacher with Minford Local Schools, where he also coached baseball, basketball and golf for many years and operated the scoreboard for the Minford Falcons for 47 years. In addition, he taught business courses at several area business colleges. He was a 1952 graduate of Minford High School, where he and his brothers, Danny and Eddie played basketball, and were affectionately known as the Gilbert Brothers. He was a graduate of Lincoln Memorial University and played minor league baseball with the Pittsburgh Pirates Association. He attended Minford United Methodist Church. He was a member of the Minford High School Athletic Hall of Fame and he enjoyed house painting in his spare time. He is survived by his wife, Martha Lou (Estep) Gilbert; a son and daughter-in-law, Tim and Beth Gilbert of Minford; two grandsons, Wes and Will Gilbert both of Minford; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Daniel and Dorothy Gilbert of Minford, Ed and Donna Gilbert of Seminole, Florida; a sister and brother-in-law, Joy and Brian Haley of St. Petersburg, Florida, and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, December 8, 2015 at Erwin-Dodson-Allen Funeral Home in Minford, with Rev. Mike Musser officiating. . Burial will be at Memorial Burial Park in Wheelersburg. Friends may call at the funeral home from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. Monday and one hour prior to the service on Tuesday.
